Born in a French garden
The big garden strawberry we eat today first appeared in France in the 1700s, when a wild strawberry from Chile was planted next to one from North America and the two crossed by chance. Its botanical name, Fragaria × ananassa, comes from its scent, which reminded people of pineapple (ananas).
Seeds on the outside
A strawberry is not a true berry. The small yellow specks on its skin are its real fruits, each holding one seed, and the red flesh is the swollen base of the flower. A single strawberry carries around two hundred of them.
Goes well with
- Scones with clotted cream or butter
- Plain or Greek yoghurt
- Vanilla ice cream or panna cotta
- Pancakes and crêpes
- Dark chocolate
- A little black pepper or balsamic vinegar, on cheese
