Myth: carrots give you night vision
The story goes that British RAF pilots in the Second World War shot down German bombers at night because they ate lots of carrots. It was wartime propaganda. Their success came from a new, secret airborne radar, and the carrot story helped hide it. Vitamin A is needed for healthy vision, but if you already get enough, extra carrots will not sharpen your eyes in the dark.
Carrots were not always orange
The first cultivated carrots, grown in Central Asia, were purple and yellow. The orange carrot we know today was developed in Europe in the 1600s, largely by Dutch growers. The popular legend that they bred it orange to honour William of Orange is a story rather than proven fact.
