Myth: a pineapple will ripen on your counter
A pineapple never gets any riper after it is picked. Leaving one on the counter will make it softer, but not sweeter. Its sweetness is decided on the plant, so choose one that already smells sweet at the base.
It is hundreds of tiny fruits in one
A pineapple is not one fruit but many, from up to 200 flowers that fuse together as they grow. Look at the pattern on the skin and you will see spirals running in two directions, typically 8 one way and 13 the other. Both are Fibonacci numbers, the same sequence found in sunflowers and pine cones.
Goes well with
- Coconut yoghurt or coconut ice cream
- Lime, fresh ginger or a little chilli
- Ham or grilled chicken, as a glaze
- Cream cheese on toast
- Fresh mint stirred into plain yoghurt
