A natural meat tenderiser
Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that breaks down protein. It is the reason papaya is used in many parts of the world to tenderise meat, and why raw papaya juice can make some foods go soft.
The black seeds are edible
Those little black seeds in the middle are edible, and they taste peppery, a bit like mustard or watercress. Many people throw them away without ever trying them.
Goes well with
- Fresh lime juice
- Ginger or a little chilli
- Coconut yoghurt
- Buttered toast or a warm farata
- Vanilla ice cream
