Mango is related to cashew and poison ivy
Mango belongs to the cashew family, which also includes poison ivy. The skin and sap of a mango contain the same kind of irritant, and some people get a rash from handling them, even though the flesh itself is fine.
A Mauritian cousin
Another mango cousin grows in Mauritius: the ambarella (called frisiter in Creole). Locals eat it ripe and sweet, or green with salt and chillies.
Goes well with
- Plain yoghurt, lassi-style
- Coconut and fresh lime
- A little chilli for a sweet-hot kick
- Cream cheese on warm toast, or a warm farata
- Vanilla ice cream
