Kiwi is not from New Zealand
Kiwi comes from China, where it was once known as the Chinese gooseberry. Seeds reached New Zealand in the early 1900s, and in the late 1950s the fruit was renamed kiwifruit for export, after New Zealand's fuzzy brown national bird.
The fruit that fights gelatin
Raw kiwi contains an enzyme called actinidin that breaks down protein. It is why fresh kiwi stops gelatin desserts from setting, and why it can turn milk-based desserts bitter if they are left standing.
Goes well with
- Plain or Greek yoghurt, spooned on just before eating
- Vanilla ice cream
- Meringue or pavlova
- Lime and fresh mint
- Ricotta or cream cheese on toast
