How Mauritians eat it
The carambole tree comes from Southeast Asia. In Mauritius the green fruit is pickled to go alongside savoury dishes, the ripe yellow ones decorate fruit salads, and some people even cook them with sugar and chilli.
A note for people with kidney problems
Star fruit contains a natural toxin that healthy kidneys clear easily, but that can be dangerous for people with kidney disease. If that applies to you or someone you are buying for, please check with a doctor before eating it.
Goes well with
- Fresh ginger and lime
- A little chilli for a sweet-hot kick
- Cream cheese on toast or crackers
- Plain yoghurt
- Tea and butter biscuits
