Beetroot has famous relatives
Beetroot, sugar beet and Swiss chard are all the same species, Beta vulgaris, bred from a wild coastal plant called sea beet. Sugar beet is a major source of the world's sugar, and in ancient times it was the leaves, not the root, that people ate.
Pink wee is nothing to worry about
After eating beetroot, around one person in ten sees pink or red wee. It is called beeturia, it is harmless, and it is just the beetroot pigment (betanin) passing through. If you ever see red without having eaten beetroot, it is worth asking a doctor.
Goes well with
- Goat's cheese or feta on toast or crackers
- Toasted walnuts and a little orange zest
- Dark chocolate or a chocolate cake
- Plain yoghurt with fresh mint
- Cold meats or a cheeseboard, like a chutney
